The blue flag is an international recognition of quality for beaches; it is based on certain criteria such as water quality, respect for the environment, the presence of safety measures and the services offered for bathers.
The Foundation for Environmental Education (a non-profit organization based in Denmark) instituted the title in 1987; since then, the blue flags have been awarded every year to the best beaches.
In recent years, many locations in Sardinia have received this recognition; in particular there is a growth from 7 municipalities in 2013 to 15 municipalities (and 45 beaches) in 2022.
