Sardinia in Roman times

Sardinia was part of the ancient republic and the Roman empire for many centuries.
The dominion of Rome began around 238 BC. and ended shortly before the fall of the Empire. In these centuries the island formed a province together with Corsica, under the name of “Sardinia et Corsica”.
The main cities of the Roman era were located along the coasts or in the plains. The mountainous areas of the hinterland were instead mostly inhabited by the descendants of the ancient Sardinian populations; it is no coincidence that the term “Barbagia” indicated, for the Romans, a place on the island inhabited by “barbarians”, that is, by people who did not speak Latin.
