A few kilometers from Porto Torres, along the northwestern coast of Sardinia, lies Fiume Santo beach, a long stretch of sand that extends towards Ezzi Mannu and Stintino. It is an area with a distinctive character, where the sea is flanked, a short distance inland, by the wetlands of the Pilo Pond; the landscape, unmistakable and wild, is very different from the more famous beaches of nearby Stintino.
In this article, we’ll delve deeper into this beach, following the general description we previously published in the article dedicated to all the beaches of Porto Torres. On that occasion, we presented it as a single, long stretch of sand in the direction of Stintino, without distinguishing the various coastal stretches of Ezzi Mannu and the Pilo pond area, which share very similar characteristics.
Pilo Pond, a stone’s throw from the sea
One of Fiume Santo’s most interesting features is its proximity to the Pilo Pond, located immediately behind the beach and separated from the sea by a stretch of dunes that tapers toward the west. The pond is an environment of great natural value, frequented by numerous bird species; at certain times of the year, it’s even possible to spot greater flamingos.
This proximity between the beach and the wetland also makes Fiume Santo interesting for birdwatchers and nature walkers.
The beach of Fiume Santo or Pilo
The history of this stretch of coast is very different from that of the nearby seaside resorts. The presence of the nearby industrial area of Porto Torres and the Fiume Santo power plant had contributed to making this part of the coast less frequented.
In particular, the stretch near the mouth of the Fiume Santo was subject to a bathing ban due to water quality for over a decade. The turning point came only in recent years: after approximately 13-14 years, monitoring in 2023 showed a return to suitable bathing conditions.
Thus, over the past few years, the area has been redeveloped, with improved access routes and parking spaces, making it easier to reach the coast.
The beach is characterized by a long, light-colored shoreline composed of sand and small fragments of quartz; the seabed deepens fairly quickly, a typical feature of this stretch of coast.
Fiume Santo, however, maintains a quieter atmosphere than the more famous beaches of northern Sardinia. The long beach, the presence of the pond, and the view of Asinara create a picturesque landscape, particularly pleasant on clear days.
The beach continues west, towards Ezzi Mannu, forming a long, uniform stretch of coastline.
It is an interesting destination, especially for those seeking a less conventional beach, where they can spend a few hours by the sea, combining swimming with a walk along the dunes and observing the natural environment of the Pilo Pond.
